If Roald Dhal’s Fantastic Mr. Fox opened a restaurant, there’s no doubt it would be just like Swire’s brand new restaurant Mr & Mrs Fox. This three-storey cooler than cool bar and restaurant soft opened just this Wednesday. Having been waiting in eager anticipation for this opening, considered by many to be the hottest opening this year, I naturally went to try it as soon as I could – for drinks and dinner on Wednesday night.
Mrs Fox takes the ground floor level bar, which is available for walk-ins only. You can enjoy some drinks around the bar or on one of the high-top tables, and also graze on some tasty bar snacks that will, unlike other bar snacks, actually serve as dinner too.
Take a journey up the wooden staircase, complete with carved cheeky fox and vixen bannisters to Mr Fox’s restaurant, a stylishly beautiful and elegant space. The focus here is on raw seafood and dry-aged beef, which is aged in the restaurant to a minimum of 28 days.
Journey on further up the stairs and you will find The Den, the most incredible private dining room. All you see is an old bookcase, stocked up with hardback books (note: I have a little obsession with books, so naturally this excited me a lot). To the side is an old piano; touch one of the keys (you might need to play a little Chopsticks or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to find the right one) and a secret door masquerading as part of the bookcase opens to reveal a stunning 24-seater private dining room with a beautiful balcony. We consulted our diaries right then and there to book in a date, just because.
I’m going to wait to give Mr & Mrs Fox a full review once the second and third floors are open (after 13th August), but I just wanted to give you a little sneak peek of this place, as it is too good not to share.
We enjoyed a couple of freshly-shucked oysters, the best calamari I have ever tasted – cooked with tandoori spices and served with a pomegranate raita – and quite honestly the best bowl of mussels I have ever had. These were steamed in an intense green curry broth with fresh lemongrass and kafir lime leaves that blew our minds. We mentioned to the restaurant manager, Peter, that we were very close to picking up the bowl and drinking it, to which he responded by giving us each a straw…and yes we did drink that curry broth through a straw!
Having now seen a glimpse into the magical land of Fantastic Mr Fox and his cheeky wife, I am even more excited to return and check out what other tricks this place has up its sleeve. And soon.
