When that mid-afternoon slump hits, we’re all guilty of finding the nearest chocolate bar or packet of crisps and claiming that we can’t get through the rest of the day without it. I’ve managed to train myself out of snacking almost entirely (except when I’m bored, sad, stressed or on holiday…ok so maybe I lied a little bit), but when I do snack, I try to make sure I snack on healthy food. Greenberry, a new monthly subscription service that delivers carefully customised boxes of healthy snacks, is trying to help people make healthier choices when it comes to snacking.

I used to subscribe to a company back in England called Graze that I absolutely loved. In fact, I kind of still subscribe to it and just claim that I’m going on very long holidays in order to pause the subscription until my next trip back! There’s no one in Hong Kong that does exactly this, but Greenberry is probably the closest thing.

Greenberry believes that cravings (whether savoury or sweet) can still be satisfied without compromising nutritious value. They therefore only include products that are organic/all-natural and contain no artificial colouring, preservatives or high-fructose corn syrup. Some, but not all, of their products are entirely sugar-free and gluten-free.

There are two options of boxes to choose from: Wellness (designed for optimum wellness, to encourage daily energy and healthy digestion) and Darlings (designed for children, to introduce them to healthy eating from a young age. Obviously also suitable for big kids too!).

Once you’ve chosen your box, you can then decide whether you’d like to choose just one month, or a three or six-month subscription. Of course, the more boxes you sign up for, the cheaper each box. Each box will contain at least eight items and content changes monthly.

I sampled a Wellness trial box, which contained shots of chia seeds, two Nakd bars, chocolate-coated seeds, organic shortbread, coconut water, organic dark chocolate, a fruit bar and some quinoa chips.

As I mentioned earlier, I actually snack very little, so I haven’t yet got through my entire Greenberry snack box. If, however, I was the type of person to eat a chocolate bar a day, then replacing this with some of Greenberry’s approved healthy snacks would definitely go a long way to improving overall health and wellbeing.

One thing to watch out for is that some of these items still contain a fair bit of sugar. I still think Greenberry could research this a bit further to try to include more snacks that are entirely sugar-free.

Boxes start at $198 per month. Greenberry is offering Dim Sum Diaries readers an exclusive $20 off their first order. Simply enter the code DSMXGB at check-out to redeem your discount. (Valid until 30 November 2015).

Greenberry boxes can also be purchased as a gift, so if there’s someone you think deserves some healthy snacks, get shopping now!
