Having greatly enjoyed dinner at Swire’s flagship stand-alone restaurant The Continental (see previous review here), I was of course very happy to accept an invitation to try a preview of its Health Booster Breakfast menu, in collaboration with luxury skincare brand La Prairie.
If The Continental is stunning at night, I think it’s even more impressive during the day, as the sun pours in through the huge windows overlooking Admiralty and highlights the gorgeous green leather interiors. It’s certainly somewhere you can expect to enjoy a lengthy breakfast in a comfortable setting where you know that both service and food will be above par.
The restaurant has of course had a tasty breakfast menu since it opened, but now, throughout the month of June, there is also the option of enjoying a Health Booster Breakfast menu, inspired by the new La Prairie Anti-Ageing Rapid Response Booster. The product, which is said to be La Prairie’s “most advanced wrinkle interceptor yet,” apparently contains a “GPS-like delivery system” that targets the cells that make the skin look younger, and supposedly are able to have a significant effect on wrinkles in just 14 days. I’m thankful to my mother’s youthful genes (my dad likes to call her Petra Pan) that I haven’t yet had to deal with many wrinkles, but I can definitely say the product feels nice on my skin at least!
In line with La Prairie’s line of anti-ageing products, The Continental’s consultant chef Rowley Leigh has devised a menu that includes super fresh and healthy dishes to kick start the day. For $180 you’ll get a choice of freshly pressed orange or grapefruit juce, or a smoothie of the day; fresh seasonal fruit; green, black or herbal tea; and a choice of ‘breakfast plate’.
I’ll go for grapefruit juice whenever I get the chance, especially if it’s as fresh and delicious as it is at The Continental. The smoothie of the day, made with cucumber, mint and apple, was also very refreshing, although there were a few complaints that it was served a trifle too cold.
After a generous and colourful fruit platter, you can choose between a plate of avocado, pink grapefruit and pumpkin seeds, topped with natural yoghurt and sliced fennel, or some spelt pancakes with grilled peaches and summer berry coulis, or eggs ‘en cocotte’ with green asparagus.
I sampled the avocado dish, which I initially thought a rather strange combination. The flavours and textures, however, worked nicely together, creating a refreshing and very light breakfast.
My dish of choice was the eggs ‘en cocotte,’ as I think it’s important to have a good dose of protein in the morning, particularly after a decent workout. Having been cooked slowly over a low temperature, the eggs were still beautifully runny and paired perfectly with the al dente green asparagus. Just make sure you ask for a spoon, as otherwise the runny eggs prove somewhat difficult to eat.
After enjoying your healthy breakfast, you’ll receive an invitation to experience an anti-ageing consultation service at La Prairie in Pacific Place, as well as a Discovery Kit after your consultation.
$180 for a nutritious and healthy breakfast in a beautiful setting with great service, I’d say is pretty fantastic value, particularly for somewhere like The Continental. If you have a breakfast meeting, have a late start to the day, or just feel like a mini-splurge for some tasty, healthy food to start the day right, you know where to go.
