Despite the numerous ‘fashionable’ desserts that come and go (cronuts, cake-pops and the like), cupcakes are something that will never, in my humble opinion, go out of fashion. People (and by ‘people’ I mean I) need cupcakes in their (/my) life. That’s why, when I was approached by cake company Citrus Sweets and asked if I’d like to try their cupcakes, there was not a moment’s hesitation.

Citrus Sweets was started by keen baker Hema Sakhrani, initially from her home kitchen. Hema now specialises not only in cupcakes, but also custom-designed cakes, cake-pops (apparently they are still ‘in fashion’ after all) and cookies.

Just in time for a girls’ night at my place, I received a box of six beautiful cupcakes to sample – two red velvet, two chocolate and two banana.

We were seriously impressed by how fluffy and light these cupcakes were; they didn’t feel heavy or overly filling, and even the thick layer of buttercream icing didn’t taste excessively sweet, as can often be the case. I can normally only handle a bite or two of a red velvet cupcake, as I can find the cream cheese frosting a little too much; this one, however, was dangerously moreish. The banana cupcake, one of Hema’s newest flavours, was my absolute favourite. Whilst some companies I know either use banana flavouring where you can taste the artificial sweetness, or use too little banana that is barely noticeable, Citrus Sweets’ banana cupcakes taste fresh and seriously banana-y, which paired perfectly with the chocolate icing.

Having looked through Citrus Sweets’ portfolio of cakes, it’s clear to see that there really is a true passion behind each and every cake that they craft. I love baking and must say my cakes usually turn out pretty damn tasty, but I would never in a million years be able to decorate them like Hema does (did you see my humble attempt at an Angry Birds cake?!).

Citrus Sweets’ prices start at $15 per cupcake (min. order of 6), $155 for a dozen cake-pops, $18 per cookie or $200 per pound for cakes, which all may vary depending on the design. When desperate times call for cupcake cravings, I’d rather choose a smaller-scale business, which I know will cater to my exact requirements, than some of the larger-scale cake stores in town. I’d even be inclined to say that these are actually even tastier too!
